Virtual Classroom

Kenan Harkin get's excited about science and he wants to get children equally as excited about reptiles!

Kenan Harkin's life has followed a fun and interesting path as a pro freestyle BMX star, action sports TV announcer, and Olympic reporter, but his true calling has been the conservation of reptiles, which he has dedicated his life to. For Harkin, a key ingredient to promoting conservation is through education. By sharing his passion for these animals with others, he hopes they too will gain an understanding of these mysterious looking creatures in a way that creates positive feelings and a real appreciation for their value.

And for Kenan, there is no better way to reach thousands of students all over this country than by entering their classroom via the web and allowing them to visit his sanctuary on a virtual field trip.

Kamp Kenan virtual field trips are fun, economical, convenient, and safe learning experiences. No permission slips, no bus rides, and no chaperones. All you need is a webcam and your class can visit Kenan’s refuge for hundreds of reptiles and take part in active investigations with Guapo & Lola the Cuban Iguanas, Darwin & Socrates the Galapagos Tortoises, Nostradamus the Aldabra tortoise, Fendi & Chuck the American alligators, Storm Shadow the albino Burmese python, Jinx the blood python, Venus & Tiger the green iguanas, and Big Mama the boa constrictor. These are just a few of the many characters and species living at Kamp Kenan.

Every journey to Kamp Kenan is appropriately tailored to the grade level taking the trip. Teachers will have the opportunity to plan details with Kenan prior to the trip so that relevant topics are included that fit the class’ current science lessons.

Kamp Kenan virtual classrooms include comprehensive information based on Full Option Science System (FOSS) guidelines and modules in support of the Next Generation Science Standards. Like FOSS, Kenan believes that the best way to learn science is to do science. The President of the United States has articulated a clear priority for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education asking that within a decade, American students "move from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math” and Kenan has taken it upon himself to take on the task.

Heightening student’s awareness of reptiles is no small task, but the part that is easy…is the fun. That’s what comes natural to Kenan, who has spent a lifetime entertaining and working with children, as an action sports star and television announcer. His virtual classrooms are truly amusing and enjoyable. From beginning to end, kids are glued.

"I love learning about the world around us, and I want to pass along that passion to children and teach them there's a scientist in all of us!” – Kenan Harkin
